An ecologically friendly solution to allow for transportation of cargo across the river without inhibiting the natural flow of traffic up and down the river is being considered as an alternative to the River Barge Crossing. This alternative will involve the use of a Derrick Crane installed on one side of the river with a boom that can reach across the river. The crane has a 60m boom arm with a carrying capacity of 30-40 tons. This means that there is no necessity to augment the river banks with docks on both sides and a barge originally planned to move materials across. Evaluations are proceeding as to the suitability of this solution.
